Carla Koulajian’s interest in painting started while studying Environmental Design at Parsons School of Design in New York. After graduating in 1986 she joined The Arts Students league of New York, an exceptional school of fine arts, where many renowned artists, amongst them Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keefe, Robert Rauschenberg, Norman Rockwell, Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein, Cy Twombly and others, honed their skills and went on to substantially shape the vocabulary of 20th century American art. Carla Koulajian’s early work consisted of portraits and still life paintings. With the encouragement of her mentors at the Art Students League, Richard Poussette-Dart and Knox Martin, the shapes and forms grew in confidence and evolved into Abstract Expressionist paintings. Deeply intense about art, Carla Koulajian depicts strong colors, shapes, texture and movement in each painting. She embraces Abstract Expressionism, the first specifically American movement to achieve worldwide influence and to put New York City at the center of the western art world, and communicates her art freely and vividly.
